The origin of Reebok dates back to 1985 when J.W. Foster started the company in Bolton, England. The company focused on the creation of athletic footwear under the name J.W. Foster and Sons.

In 1958, two of the descendants of J.W. Foster took control of the company and changed the name to Reebok. The name is derived from the Afrikaans spelling of rhebok, a species of gazelle native to Southern Africa.

In 1979, the company began its distribution in the United States, where it was the most expensive sneakers on the market.

Taking inspiration from the aerobic and fitness craze of the 80's, Reebok released the first sneaker made specifically for women in 1982, the Freestyle.

In the late 80's, Reebok developed Pump technology, which can bee seen on numerous, basketball sneakers, as well as running and tennis sneakers.

Over the years Reebok has been the official sponsor of the national teams, sports leagues, individual teams, and athletes.

Reebok also recently has had a share of celebrity lines of footwear including G-Unit sneakers, "S.Carter" by Jay-Z, and actress Scarlett Johansson branded footwear and apparel.

In January 2009 Reebok was acquired by adidas.
